WADSWORTH ELECTRIC & COMMUNICATIONS DIVISIONSThe City of Wadsworth owns and operates its own electric distribution system. Electricity is purchased from American Municipal Power of Ohio, a group of municipally owned and operated electric system throughout Ohio, and serves over 10,000 customers. Local ownership insures a greater commitment to service for residential, commercial, and industrial users. The municipal system also provides free street lighting, free electricity for city operations, and rates for customers which are on the average 40% lower than those available through privately-owned utilities. In addition, the system is highly reliable due to a well-designed loop system that prevents brownouts and minimizes outages. The City presently has five substations with plans to add a new 138,000Kv delivery point and two new substations in 1999. In the last few years, the City has installed over 13 miles of fiber optic cable to interconnect city government buildings, electric substations (SCADA system) and schools. The schools presently enjoy fiber optic connectivity of their Novell based ethernet for supplemental student education (Money Magazine January 1996 vol. 25 No.1 page 108).
Wadsworth Communications Network (WCN) The city is also participating in a project to connect all county high schools and selected public buildings with fiber optic cable to local Universities for educational purposes.
