CIVIL SERVICE/PERSONNEL

CIVIL SERVICE
The Wadsworth Civil Service Commission is comprised of three members and a secretary. The Commission is responsible for providing eligibility lists to fill vacant positions. Since Wadsworth is a statutory city, the Ohio Revised Code and the Wadsworth Civil Service Commission set the parameters for the filling of vacancies. All full time and permanent part time positions in the City of Wadsworth are classified positions with the exception of those positions which are direct appointments of an elected official or his/her appointee. Paid volunteer and seasonal positions are unclassified.

The Civil Service Commission is responsible for testing and preparing an eligibility list when a request has been received from an appointing authority. Tests administered by the Commission are developed to be job specific. There are no standardized tests. The Commission contracts with outside agencies to develop and administer tests for certain positions within the City. These are primarily police and fire entry level and promotional exams. The Commission may contract for other exams if circumstances so warrant.

An eligibility list is effective for a period of one year from the date of the exam. The Commission may extend the list for an additional year.

The Civil Service Office and Human Resources are combined. The Human Resources Manager, Jim Kovacs, serves as both Civil Service Secretary and Human Resources Manager. The Human Resources/Civil Service Office is located in Wadsworth City Hall, 2nd Floor. The phone number for the Human Resources/Civil Service Office is 330/335-2750.

EMPLOYMENT/APPLICATIONS
Employment applications are accepted when the Civil Service Commission has advertised for a specific exam. Applications must be completed in person by the applicant at the Personnel Office. Walk-in applications and/or unsolicited resumes are not accepted. All open positions are advertised in the Sun Banner, a weekly newspaper publication, and the Tuesday edition of the Medina County Gazette. This issue is utilized as it is distributed free to all Medina County residents. Notice of a scheduled exam is posted on the 2nd Floor City Hall bulletin board and on the Community Access Channel of cable television. Some specialized positions may be advertised in the Sunday edition of the Akron Beacon Journal. Exams are normally conducted at the Steiner Youth Center which is located at 567 School Drive, Wadsworth.

The City has 174 full time employees and approximately 100 part-time and paid volunteers.
