Automated Collection System: Automated residential trash collection is being utilized in many communities because of higher efficiency in the collection process. One operator of an automated truck can service more residents than a crew of 2 or 3 manually picking up cans and bags. The risk of strains, sprains, or other injuries to the workers are minimized due the operator staying in the confines of the truck’s cab. The streets should stay neater due to the carts design to keep the trash in and animals out. At this time there are no plans of changing your day of pick up. If some changes in routing are needed in the future, notification will be mailed to residents affected. Enclosed are some questions and answers regarding the new system and a brochure from the cart manufacturer. Please read this information as it will answer many questions. More information will be delivered with the carts. This transition is going to be a learning experience for both the residents of Wadsworth and the Sanitation Department. With patience and understanding, the switch over should be smooth. Any questions or comments can be directed to the Sanitation Department at 330-335-2847 Residential Automated Collection Q & A: 1. Why an Automated Collection system? This system will allow the Sanitation Department to more efficiently collect Solid Waste from the residents by utilizing the latest technology in garbage collection trucks. One operator can now service more homes than a crew of two did before. 2. Why is automated collection better than manual methods? Larger containers can be used-usually 80 to 99 gallons. Lifting is done mechanically resulting in less injuries and less labor costs. 3. What will this new service cost? Each resident will be delivered a 96 gallon wheeled cart. The monthly fee will currently be $13.00 per 96 gallon container. If needed, additional containers can be provided for an additional monthly fee. A smaller 64 gallon cart will be available on an application basis. 4. If a medical or physical condition prohibits my handling a cart, what can be done? An Exemption Application can be requested from the Sanitation Department by calling 330-335-2847. Once the application is received, verified, and approved, a Sanitation Department supervisor will contact you to discuss an alternate point of collection for your cart. 5. Who maintains the cart? The City’s Sanitation Department will maintain carts due to normal wear and tear. All problems with carts can be reported to the Sanitation Department at 330-335-2847. It is suggested that garbage be placed in plastic bags then placed in the cart. Occasional rinsing of the cart can help keep odors from forming. Damage due to resident’s failure to secure cart between collections will be charged to the resident. 6. Where is the cart to be placed for collection? Place the cart near the street after 7:00PM the night before your collection day. The City’s Sanitation Department collect at night to avoid traffic and parked vehicles. Carts must be removed from the collection area by 7:00PM the day of pick up. 7. What happens if I move? The carts are the property of the City of Wadsworth. The serial number of each cart is recorded and assigned to your residence. When moving, the cart is to stay at the address it was assigned to. If you are moving into a newly constructed home, a cart will be delivered when application for City utility services is made. 8. What can be put into the cart? All household refuse, trash, and garbage. 9. What cannot be put in the cart? Poisons, acids, caustics, explosives, hot ashes, yard waste, soils, building materials, or any other dangerous or hazardous materials. 10. What if the cart does not hold all of my trash? Occasional extra trash can be taken to the City’s Solid Waste Transfer Station on Auble Street. If an additional cart is required, call the Sanitation Department at 330-335-2847 for assistance. 11. Does the City of Wadsworth have a recycling program? All solid waste collected by the City’s Sanitation Department is taken to the Medina County’s Central Processing Facility in Westfield Township where recyclables are manually and mechanically removed from the waste stream. Glass bottles and jars can be taken to the glass igloos located on the north side of the Great Oaks shopping center parking lot.
