Sanitation Department

Regular Collection Service:
The City of Wadsworth provides Solid Waste collection and disposal services for the residents of the City.  The City provides a 96 gallon wheeled cart for residential waste.  Carts are to be placed near the street after 7:00 PM the night before collection.  The Sanitation Department services carts at night to avoid traffic and parked vehicles.  Carts must be removed from the collection area by 7:00 PM the day of pick up.  The Sanitation Crews work every day, including holidays, except Christmas day.  All household refuse, trash, and garbage are to be placed in the cart, as only what is in the cart will be picked up.  Poisons, acids, caustics, explosives, hot ashes, yard waste, soils, building materials, or any other dangerous or hazardous material are not to be put into the carts.

Special Yard Waste Collection Service:
The Special Yard Waste Pick-up program begins in May and runs through October.  Residents on High Street, Main Street, West of High and Main Streets, and North of Interstate 76 will have Yard Waste pick up on Tuesday mornings.  Residents South of Interstate 76 and East of High and Main Streets will be serviced on Wednesday mornings.  All Yard Waste must be placed in bags or containers with a maximum capacity of 30 gallons.  Each container must have a Yard Waste sticker in order to be picked up.  Stickers are available for $1.00 each at the Utility Office in City Hall or at the Transfer Station on Auble Street.  Any container having mixed Yard Waste and trash will not be picked up.  Brush tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet and no bigger than 2 feet in diameter will be picked up with the special Yard Waste pickup on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Bundles of brush are to be placed at the street with any Yard Waste by 6:00 AM on the day of pick up in order to be collected.

No Yard Waste will be accepted at the Transfer Station.  Residents with
large amounts of brush and Yard Waste may haul it directly to the Medina
County Compost Facility located on Lake Road in Westfield Township.

During the months of November through April, Yard Waste and brush will
be picked up monthly on the third Tuesday.  Request for pick up must be
received by the Transfer Station prior to the third Tuesday to be put on the
schedule.  The Transfer Station’s direct phone number is (330) 335-2847.

Leaf pick up begins in the Fall when warranted.  Leaves are to be raked to
the curb line.  Care should be taken to keep the leaves out of the actual
street until the City crew is picking them up.  Schedules of pick up days
will be on the Community Cable Channel.

Annual Clean Up Week:
The City’s annual “clean up” week normally begins the last Monday of April and runs through the week.  All items to be picked up must be at the street the evening before the normal pick up day.  Excluded from this pick up are tires, appliances, motor oil, any liquid wastes, construction and demolition materials, and any item weighing over 50 pounds or too bulky for one person to handle.  Loose brush will be picked up during this Spring Cleanup week.  A maximum of one truckload per residence will be observed.  Property owners having more than the maximum may take the extra to the Medina County Compost Facility on Lake Road in Westfield Township.

Transfer Station Facility:
The City’s Solid Waste Transfer Station is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday and from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturdays.  City residents delivering refuse normally collected by City Sanitation Crews, from their own residence, can dispose of such refuse at the Transfer Station at no extra charge.  All other acceptable materials delivered will have a fee based on Section 959.04 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Wadsworth.

Appliances are accepted at the Transfer Station for a fee of $5.00 each.  Any appliance containing refrigerants must have a certificate of purging in order to be accepted.

Materials not accepted at the Transfer station include any liquid waste, tires, shingles, large amounts of construction materials, yard waste, brush, or any other materials deemed hazardous or detrimental to the operation of the Transfer Station.

Automated Collection System:
The City of Wadsworth’s Sanitation Department will be implementing an Automated Collection system in June 2002.  At that time, new 96 gallon wheeled containers will be delivered to each household to be used for the disposal of all household rubbish, trash, and garbage.  These carts are designed and manufactured to stand up to the stresses of an automated pick up system and will be serviced with specialized trucks with mechanical arms that will grab, lift, empty, and return the carts to their original position.

Automated residential trash collection is being utilized in many communities because of higher efficiency in the collection process.  One operator of an automated truck can service more residents than a crew of 2 or 3 manually picking up cans and bags.  The risk of strains, sprains, or other injuries to the workers are minimized due the operator staying in the confines of the truck’s cab.  The streets should stay neater due to the carts design to keep the trash in and animals out.

At this time there are no plans of changing your day of pick up.  If some changes in routing are needed in the future, notification will be mailed to residents affected.

Enclosed are some questions and answers regarding the new system and a brochure from the cart manufacturer.  Please read this information as it will answer many questions.  More information will be delivered with the carts.

This transition is going to be a learning experience for both the residents of Wadsworth and the Sanitation Department.  With patience and understanding, the switch over should be smooth.  Any questions or comments can be directed to the Sanitation Department at 330-335-2847

Residential Automated Collection Q & A:

1.       Why an Automated Collection system?

This system will allow the Sanitation Department to more efficiently collect Solid Waste from the residents by utilizing the latest technology in garbage collection trucks.  One operator can now service more homes than a crew of two did before.

2.       Why is automated collection better than manual methods?

Larger containers can be used-usually 80 to 99 gallons.  Lifting is done mechanically resulting in less injuries and less labor costs.

3.       What will this new service cost?

Each resident will be delivered a 96 gallon wheeled cart.  The monthly fee will currently be $13.00 per 96 gallon container.  If needed, additional containers can be provided for an additional monthly fee.  A smaller 64 gallon cart will be available on an application basis.

4.       If a medical or physical condition prohibits my handling a cart, what can be done?

An Exemption Application can be requested from the Sanitation Department by calling 330-335-2847.  Once the application is received, verified, and approved, a Sanitation Department supervisor will contact you to discuss an alternate point of collection for your cart.

5.       Who maintains the cart?

The City’s Sanitation Department will maintain carts due to normal wear and tear.  All problems with carts can be reported to the Sanitation Department at 330-335-2847.  It is suggested that garbage be placed in plastic bags then placed in the cart.  Occasional rinsing of the cart can help keep odors from forming.  Damage due to resident’s failure to secure cart between collections will be charged to the resident.

6.       Where is the cart to be placed for collection?

Place the cart near the street after 7:00PM the night before your collection day.  The City’s Sanitation Department collect at night to avoid traffic and parked vehicles.  Carts must be removed from the collection area by 7:00PM the day of pick up.

7.       What happens if I move?

The carts are the property of the City of Wadsworth.  The serial number of each cart is recorded and assigned to your residence.  When moving, the cart is to stay at the address it was assigned to.  If you are moving into a newly constructed home, a cart will be delivered when application for City utility services is made.

8.       What can be put into the cart?

All household refuse, trash, and garbage.

9.       What cannot be put in the cart?

Poisons, acids, caustics, explosives, hot ashes, yard waste, soils, building materials, or any other dangerous or hazardous materials.

10.   What if the cart does not hold all of my trash?

Occasional extra trash can be taken to the City’s Solid Waste Transfer Station on Auble Street.  If an additional cart is required, call the Sanitation Department at 330-335-2847 for assistance.

11.   Does the City of Wadsworth have a recycling program?

All solid waste collected by the City’s Sanitation Department is taken to the Medina County’s Central Processing Facility in Westfield Township where recyclables are manually and mechanically removed from the waste stream.  Glass bottles and jars can be taken to the glass igloos located on the north side of the Great Oaks shopping center parking lot.

Any questions can be directed either to the Utility Office in City Hall at
